Open your eyes people!!
Hearbeat by Nneka
You said you’d be there for me
In times of trouble when I need you and I’m down
And likewise you need friendship
It’s from my side pure love but I see lately things have been changing
You have goals to achieve
But the roads you take abroad and heartless
That wants you make another way
You throw stones
Can you see that I am human I am breathing
But you don’t give a damnCan’t you feel my heart is beating
Can’t you see the pain you’re causing
Can’t you feel my heart is beating
Can’t you see the pain you’re causingBlood blood blood … keeps rushing
And now the world is asleep
How will you ever wake her up when she gets deep in the dreams, wishing
And yet so many die
And still we think that it is all about us
It’s all about you
You sold your soul to the evil and the lust
and the passion and the money and you
And the same ones die, and people hunger for talking,
suffer under civilized damn robbers but they stabled usInvaded, eliminated, erased, interrogated
Our tradition, our love for our fellow countrymen,
our property, our ancestors – have diedCan you feel, can you feel my heart beating ?
This is Nneka Egbuna, a singer from Nigeria who later relocated to Germany. This video moves me. It’s a call to love, a call of justice, a call to raise others above ourselves. I want people to grab a hold of this. I want to live my life recognizing others. What would our nations look like if we put others above ourselves? If we realized the beauty in serving others? Have people not yet discovered that wealth does not fulfill our deepest desires? What would we look like as nations if people were happy, and fulfilled and people lived their lives without worries or fears? What would it look like if people were able to trust?
This video along with this article, about an experiment that the Washington Post undertook about what would happen if they took acclaimed violinist, Joshua Bell, and got him to perform in a public street setting, are incredibly moving. The point of the article was to see if patrons would recognize the ‘genius” of Joshua Bell, or would they just write him off and continue on with their day. The heart of the experiment was to see how people would respond to beauty in a non traditional setting. Our we too caught up that we can not appreciate beauty? Can we not take time out of our days for something non- scheduled? Watching how the majority of the people responded in this situation made me nauseated. Open your eyes people!!
